Galleria Chamber to Award 2009 Scholarships & PathMaker Awards
HOUSTON (March 17, 2009) – For the seventh consecutive year, the Galleria Chamber of Commerce will do their part to help fill a void in higher education for select graduates of three Houston area high schools. While there are a variety of scholarships available to lessen the burden of skyrocketing tuition, on college freshmen of low to moderate income backgrounds, little is done to address the cost of supplies.
Enter the Galleria Chamber and their scholarship program that includes a Chamber College Chest for each recipient. “Addressing both tuition and supplies allows the Galleria business community to positively impact our scholarship winner’s transition to college life,” said Don Sweat, Galleria Chamber President. Chests include a laptop computer, gasoline cards, linens and other small but costly items essential to a student’s ability to live on campus.
The Chamber will award three scholarships with chests on Monday, June 8th at the annual Galleria Chamber Vintner Dinner, to be held at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House. Scholarship recipients are identified from approximately 40 applications submitted each year – winners are selected based on a criterion that includes GPA, test scores, community service, school activities, leadership, work experience and socio-economic hardship.
Additionally, each scholarship recipient will identify a teacher or counselor, who had a profound impact on that student’s life, to receive the Galleria Chamber PathMaker Award for dedication and educational excellence.
